When Is the Best Time of Year to Prune Trees in the UK?
Everything You Need to Know About Tree Pruning
If you are going to ensure that a tree remains healthy and strong as well as looking its best, then regular pruning is non-negotiable. Here at Kent Tree Brothers, pruning is one of the most popular tree maintenance services that we offer. When should you call us in to carry it out on your tree(s), though? Here is everything you need to know to time a visit from a member of our team perfectly.
Late Autumn to Early Spring
First, let’s take a look at deciduous trees. These are ones that lose their leaves in the autumn. The best time of year to prune these kinds of trees is during their dormant season, which usually runs from late autumn through the winter months and into early spring. If you want to make a note of this on your calendar, you’re looking at between November and March.
During this period, there is little to no active growth, and the lack of leaves makes it easier to see the tree’s structure and identify any branches that need to be removed. Pruning during this time also allows a tree to heal quickly and put all of its energy into growing strong, healthy shoots when spring arrives!
What About Evergreen Trees?
For evergreen trees that keep their leaves all year round, the time frame is a little different, but could still be timed alongside the pruning of your deciduous trees. The best time to prune evergreen trees is in spring, around March or April. The risk of any serious frost has passed by this point, and the tree is about to enter its growing season. Some careful pruning to control its shape and size will help to keep it healthy throughout the rest of the year and beyond.
