What does a tree survey do?

A tree survey is a study of any trees on your land. When we carry out a tree condition survey, we will make a note of the following:

  • Species
  • Age and life expectancy
  • Number of trees
  • Location
  • Size
  • Leaf colour
  • Canopy condition and spread
  • Root condition and protection areas
  • Presence of any ivy or fungus

All of this can help you to make the right decision on any action needed going forward. Why are they needed, though? Let’s look at that!

Why are tree surveys needed?

In a lot of cases, tree surveys are required by law to help protect and conserve certain types of trees. This can be down to a number of reasons. They might be members of an endangered species or covered by a Tree Preservation Order. They may also be located in a conservation area, in which case, the same as with a tree protected by a TPO, you’ll need a tree survey for planning if you want to alter one in any way.

The British Standard for Trees says that, in the event of design, demolition and construction, ‘appropriate measures should be taken to assess existing trees on and adjacent to a site where any new development is proposed’. When you have a tree survey carried out by our team, you will have a much higher chance of your planning permission application being approved, and you will also have the information you need to make truly informed choices about what to do with any trees and how to factor them into your development.

What to expect from our commercial tree surveying

You can be sure that all of our tree surveys meet the five stages of the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) guidelines. These are:

  • Arboricultural Feasibility Advice
  • Tree surgery and constraints advice
  • Arboricultural impact assessment
  • Arboricultural method statement
  • Site Supervision

Once we have assessed all trees on your site or within a stated neighbouring area, we will score each one with a rating of good, fair or poor. We will then be able to provide an Arboricultural Impact Assessment. This will tell you if any trees need to be removed as a matter of safety. It will also provide suggestions on what action needs to be taken on a tree or what other trees could replace them. Remember, we can handle all of that work for you.
