Trees That You Can Cut Down Without Permission

Your Complete Guide

You’ve probably heard that you need to seek permission to cut down a tree, and this might be putting you off taking action on one in your garden. Not all trees require permission to be cut down, though! We’ve worked on all kinds of trees over the years, from ones covered by things like TPOs and conservation area rules to those that can just be cut down here and there.

Here’s everything you need to know about not needing permission, and why you still need to call in an expert in tree cutting to carry out the work.

The tree is in your own garden

If the tree is in your own garden, then you generally won’t need permission to have it cut down. The key here is that you own the property. If you don’t, then you will need to speak to your landlord first. If they give you the all clear to proceed though, there shouldn’t be any more issues! A large portion of the work we carry out is cutting down trees in privately owned gardens, whether it’s to do something different with the space or because of some concerns regarding the tree.

How big can a tree be before you need permission to cut it down?

There tends to be a bit of confusion surrounding this one. If the total wood cut from a tree is over 5m³, then you need a felling licence to cut it down. This is different to the permission that you obtain from the council in the event of a TPO, for example. It is possible to apply for a tree felling licence yourself, but you can always leave the work to a team like us! We’re fully covered to cut down trees of all sizes.

Always call us to carry out the work

Just because you don’t need permission to cut a tree down doesn’t mean that you should do it yourself. Felling a tree is a really complex job that can be dangerous if you don’t know how to do it properly. Sometimes a tree needs to be felled in sections to prevent any damage to surrounding property, and you need to know how to direct it as it falls if it is being felled in one piece. We know how to use powerful equipment safely, so you can be sure that everything will go smoothly.

We will also remove all waste and can even get rid of the tree stump for you. So calling us means less mess and disruption!
