Summer Tree Care Checklist for Homeowners

How to Look After Your Trees

Summer might be behind us now, but it never hurts to know what you can do differently next year when it comes to looking after your trees! We are often asked what the essential tree care jobs for summer are, so we thought that we would put together a quick guide for you to refer to when the weather starts to warm up, along with why it’s really important to call in a provider of tree work Kent property owners trust. That’s us!

Keep an eye on the leaves

One of the easiest ways to see how your tree is faring in the summer months is to take a look at the leaves. Are they drooping? Do they seem smaller than you would expect? The former can come from not getting enough water over the last few days, while the latter could be a sign that it is suffering from severe drought. Issues like leaves falling or changing colour could be signs of larger issues, and that’s when you should give us a call.

Give them plenty of water

It’s no secret that plants and trees need a lot more water in the summer months, but you might be surprised at how much you need to increase it! How do you know if your trees are in need of water in the first place? Poke your finger a few inches into the soil. If it is cool and damp and your finger comes out with some soil stuck to it, the tree has been watered well. If not, you know what you need to do next.

Water your tree in the early morning or evening when the water will not evaporate as fast. Don’t rush. Water in a steady stream, so it doesn’t just run off the surface of the soil. Do this a few times a week.

Keep on top of weeding

Just like any of the other plants in your garden, weeds thrive in the summer. While they might seem harmless, they can drink up a lot of water and rob your trees of what they need. So take some time to pull up any weeds that are growing around or near the base of your tree. Not only will this improve the appearance of your garden, but your trees will appreciate not having to compete for their water.

We’re here to help

If something doesn’t seem right with your tree during the summer months, you should give us a call. Tree surgery isn’t usually performed in the summer as it can pose some risks to the tree. Sometimes it just can’t be avoided, though! That’s why you need a trusted expert to carry out the work. Whatever kind of tree care we are providing, we will do so with the utmost attention to detail, as well as provide you with lots of advice.
